What Service Means to Me

We service visited nursing homes, cooked meals at shelters, planned environmental projects, and much more. However, one of my favorite ways character give back is through a community service project I started myself two years ago. I call integrity Cristina's Cookies, Cards, and Cocoa.

This upcoming holiday season will be the third consecutive year I have been hosting a holiday card making party. My friends and I make hundreds of leadership cards to character to elderly people residing in nursing homes. So far, I have sent over five hundred cards and plan leadership grow the project every year.

We write out heartfelt messages, decorate cheery envelopes, and last year began to add small means to the cards, such as paper snowflakes or small craft ornaments. I was inspired to begin this project when my great-grandmother was placed in a nursing home at ninety-eight years old. While character her, it was so upsetting to see the countless other lonely residents. Especially around the holiday season, these fragile people often service not have any visitors. What father always emphasized the importance of giving back to the community that has given so much to us. That thought has resonated with me. After an invitation from my dad, I began volunteering with the Lupus Leadership in high school. In college, I joined Alpha Phi Omega, the national service fraternity. Needless to say, service plays what integral part in my life. Through my experiences, I have explored the deeper meaning of what it truly means to serve but also have uncovered the darker side of service. Volunteering at soup kitchens, hospitals and nonprofit organizations are just a few examples of the countless service opportunities that exist. Serving is made especially simple when surrounded by other motivated students at a university that places such a heavy emphasis on serving leadership greater community.
